Algeria-Tunisia Sign Defence Pact: Securing Regime & Energy Ambitions
Algiers is seeking to bolster regime stability and IMEC plans.
On 7 October, Tunisia and Algeria signed a defence agreement to strengthen military cooperation during a visit by Tunisia’s Minister of National Defence, Khaled Suahili, to Algiers. This agreement updates a previous accord signed at the turn of the century and includes a commitment to enhance relations and increase the frequency of meetings between the Tunisian-Algerian Joint Military Committee. The development comes amid heightened protests in Algeria and Morocco over corruption and socio-economic grievances. With a particular emphasis on border security, it appears that Algiers is seeking to clamp down on potential arms flows in an effort to bolster regime stability and secure the Tunisia-Algeria frontier to support the $8.2 billion Italy-Tunisia-Algeria power link project.
