Algeria’s Strategic Partnership with South Africa: A Gateway for Intensifying Geopolitical Competition in North Africa
Algeria is likely to face significant challenges ahead as it seeks to balance its domestic security needs with the complexities of regional and international competition.
Last week, Algeria signed a Strategic Partnership Declaration with South Africa, along with five Memoranda of Understanding, during the seventh session of the South Africa-Algeria Binational Commission. These bilateral agreements focus on cooperation in various sectors, namely renewable energy, infrastructure development, technology, agriculture, and manufacturing. Accelerated by BRICS' recent rejection of its membership, these agreements demonstrate Algeria's economic diversification efforts and its determination to further integrate into the bloc. However, due to ongoing economic challenges, the North African nation is not confining itself to BRICS alone. Instead, Algeria is leveraging the geopolitical landscape to strengthen ties with the US and the EU while maintaining its position on Western Sahara.
