China Enters Syrian Game with Bang: Landmark MoU Towards Long-Awaited Strategic Partnership?
Sharaa’s pragmatism may at last yield results from the China–Syria Strategic Partnership.
In a landmark move, the Syrian General Directorate of Ports has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China’s Fidi Contracting Company to develop over one million square metres within the Hassia and Adra Free Zones. This agreement signals Syria’s strategic efforts to reposition itself on the global supply chain, as international actors increasingly seek engagement opportunities in the country. The recently launched ‘SilkLink’ initiative appears to have been more than symbolic, foreshadowing a growing Chinese role in Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The development also reflects a sustained Chinese intention to engage with Syria since Bashar al-Assad’s rule,despite earlier reservations linked to Uyghur-related concerns. Importantly, this MoU represents one of the most significant international agreements Syria has secured in the post-war era, signalling promising ties eastwards for Syria which can help it fight off undesired Western pressure.
