Egypt-Cyprus Gas Deal: Cornerstone for IMEC, Shield Against US
Egypt’s preparedness for an upcoming war with Israel is at the mercy of an ever-aggressive Washington and integration into IMEC is proving vital in defense.
In what is being lauded as a historic and 'game-changing' milestone, Egypt and Cyprus have signed several deals allowing Cyprus to use Egypt’s gas infrastructure to export natural gas to Europe. The gas will come from the newly discovered Cronos gas field, as well as the Aphrodite gas field, both of which lie within Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The deals were signed during the opening ceremony of EGYPES 2025, in the presence of the presidents of both countries. The development is a clear sign of Cairo’s growing role in the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), refuting Hamas and its allies' claims that they hindered the plan. Moreover, this essential role is being leveraged to withstand Washington’s pressure on Palestinian displacement, much like Egypt's BRICS membership was utilised earlier this month in a deal with Russia’s Lukoil.
