Oman’s Karbala Airport Venture: Deepening Shia Crescent Ties
Muscat is leading the Shia crescent to BRICS.
In April, Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) and Iraq’s Teebat Karbala Company formalised a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening Iraq’s civil aviation sector through the development of Karbala International Airport. The 15-month agreement sees Oman Airports collaborating with Teebat Karbala, the principal investor in the project. Oversight of this key initiative in Iraq’s aviation sector comes amid a broader push in Iran-Oman relations; one that allows Muscat to deepen its ideological alignment with the ‘Shia Crescent’ of the Middle East.
