Starlink: A Portal to a Middle Eastern Digital Age or Space War?
The regional war is increasingly a ‘space war,’ in which satellites play a key military role for both local and international actors.
Starlink is expected to begin full operations in Syria following the success of the rebels in ousting former President Bashar Assad. Starlink’s integration into the regional security fabric is ushering in a digital era marked by heightened technological competition in the Middle East. The United States Department of Defence-funded venture is being used to overcome territorial restrictions imposed by nation-states in the region, thereby widening the door to espionage. The introduction of this new power dynamic intensifies local tensions and may lead to a new arena of great power competition and conflict in the region.
