US Sanctions Houthi-BRICS Newly Formed Alliance
The Houthis are leveraging the Palestinian cause to distract from mounting domestic plight and to assert leadership in the AoR, through BRICS weapons and tech.
Promptly after Trump took office, Washington took action in response to Houthi attacks on American and Western ships passing through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In late January, the US put in motion an order to designate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The decision took effect on 4 March. The penalties mostly revolve around blocking Ansarullah officials' financial freedoms, as it pertains to assets. The US Treasury mainly pointed to the group's weapons smuggling and collaboration with Russia as the cause. The FTO designation will further harm the Yemeni population, but the new Houthi-BRICS alliance is not expected to be hindered.
