Türkiye Reaps Step Toward Gas Hub Status with Syria Pipeline Pact
Ankara reinforces its ambition to serve as a pivotal energy hub for Europe while Syria secures desperately needed energy.
Türkiye’s Energy Minister announced a landmark agreement to supply Syria with 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually and 1,000 megawatts of electricity, with gas deliveries expected to commence next month. This follows the completion of the Kilis-Aleppo pipeline, a critical infrastructure link between the two nations. Concurrently, Qatar, with tacit approval from Washington, has committed to supplying natural gas to Syria via the Arab Gas Pipeline, with 2 million cubic metres transiting through Jordan daily to generate 400 megawatts of electricity. These developments position Türkiye and Qatar as central players in Syria’s post-Assad economic recovery, while advancing broader geopolitical objectives, including countering Russian influence and aligning Syria with Western and Gulf interests. The Turkish market gain in Syria is also a loss for Iran which sold oil and gas to the former Assad Regime.
